In 2018 the decision was made to not support the OXC Rookie Series.

2017 OXC Rookie Racing Report

Entries were up in 2017 for our fourth OXC Rookie Races. A total of six events were held across the province in Ancaster, Owen Sound, Schomberg, Maxville, Stevensville, and Kingston with an average of 31 entries each. Half of our hosts were rookies too, coming on board for the first time to bring the sport of Xtreme Cowboy racing to their area.

The Intermediate and Open Training divisions were the largest by far with the rest of the divisions coming in fairly equal. Kingston had an exceptional youth turnout as a first-time show this year while Schomberg led the pack with their open division entries.

Each show brought its own special touch, providing a supportive family atmosphere where competitors not only raced but also learned the ropes. Many were trying our sport for the first time while others in the audience promised to be ready to join us in 2018. Rookie races also provided an opportunity for returning riders to get some miles on under competition pressure. One race was successfully held in conjunction with an entry-level clinic the day before the race. A few hosts even joined in the fun, racing as auditors at their own events.

The divisions were expanded in 2017 to reflect the full slate of 8 EXCA divisions with our own regional adaptations such as the lead line allowance in the Young Guns division and the allowance for English tack. With the changes at the sanctioned level in 2017 the Rookie Races were basically a low-key mirror of the OXC/EXCA sanctioned races.

While this could be viewed as a redundancy, the Rookie Races provide a valuable opportunity to try out the sport without the pressure of a sanctioned race with most held at private facilities with a more relaxed atmosphere. The Rookie Races are held early in the season as preparation for competition at the sanctioned level. Membership was not required to enter Rookie, which encouraged more local participation.

All of the races were well run with many new faces running the shows as hosts, volunteers, secretaries, announcers and judges. This year all races started at 10 a.m. with the Intermediate division not to start until at least noon, a successful structure which allowed riders to better budget their time. Unlike the sanctioned races, there are no year-end awards for Rookie in 2017 because of the regional nature of attendance across such a large province. Ribbons and some gifts were awarded in all divisions at each show.
