List of current Rookie events can be found HERE.

What is an OXC Rookie Race?
OXC successfully held their first official 'Rookie Race' in 2015.
The 2016 OXC Rookie Series
was developed as place for those who want to improve their horsemanship and obstacle skills at an introductory competitive level.
In 2016 there were 6 Rookie Race divisions for horses and riders to choose from.
2017 season will offer 8 divisions at the OXC Rookie Racing level.
See the below guide for information on rules, divisions and hosting.

2017 OXC Rookie Rules

OXC Membership is not required to race at the Rookie level. A $5 non-member fee will apply. Proof of individual liability insurance is required. Entry fees are $40 per adult per division, $30 per youth per division with a $10 administration fee per horse and rider pair.

All entries must be made and paid prior to race day to allow for administrative set-up. Entries will be allowed on the day of competition, prior to the start time, with a $20 penalty. Late entries will ride first.

Riders may enter into more than one division, where eligible (see descriptions above). Entries cannot cross over in Novice, Intermediate and Non-Pro, which are based on the experience of the rider, on the same race day but entries can change divisions at a subsequent show if a rider over or underestimates their capability. Rookie racing provides the opportunity to find your appropriate level of competition to compete at the sanctioned level.

Entries are self-regulated, meaning that you will be the judge of whether you are competitive in a division. Division eligibility will be regarded as similar between the Rookie Races and OXC/EXCA sanctioned races.

Riders that may normally compete at the sanctioned level are welcome to compete at the Rookie level in an appropriate division.

Each horse & rider team entry will have one run per division, scored on time, obstacles and horsemanship as per EXCA guidelines. Rookie Series Obstacles will be numbered, where numbers are available. A walk through will be performed with riders and the judge prior to each division (no horses).

Ribbons will be awarded for 1st to 5th place. Other prizes will be at the discretion of the host. Rookie Races are stand-alone events. There are no Rookie year-end awards for 2017. No OXC Rookie points will be tracked for EXCA standings.

Each rider will have access to his or her own score sheet after the competition, either at the show or through e-mail request to the show secretary afterwards.

All EXCA tack rules will apply with the exception that English tack will be allowed for the Rookie level. Competitors in OXC Rookie Races will be permitted to use any safe saddle, English, Western, Australian, or breed specific, and must wear clean, tidy and appropriate attire. Boots with a heel are required. Helmets are encouraged for adult competitors and are required for all youth. EXCA rules regarding bridles will apply: Mechanical hackamores, tie downs, martingales, cavessons, drop nose bands and any form of gag bit or slip bit is not allowed. A bosalito will be considered a cavesson except in a traditional two rein set up. A bosalito will not be used with a get down rope. It is acceptable to ride without a bridle or bareback. Please note that this OXC Rookie Series tack policy will NOT apply to the regular OXC/EXCA sanctioned events events, where EXCA tack rules will apply in full. Any questions regarding tack may be discussed with the judge prior to competing.
